Melody Gardot, Donny McCaslin, Ben Monder, Craig Taborn

Biography

Melody Gardot is an American jazz vocalist, guitarist, and pianist born in New Jersey in 1985. She began taking piano lessons at age nine and by 16 was performing at local nightclubs in Philadelphia, singing a mix of jazz, pop, and rock cover songs. Her early years were marked by financial hardship, as she spent much of her youth living with her Polish immigrant grandmother in Philadelphia while her mother worked as a photographer.

At 19 years old, while studying fashion at the Community College of Philadelphia, Gardot's life changed dramatically when she was struck by an SUV during an illegal turn while riding her bicycle. The accident left her with serious injuries including head trauma and pelvic fractures, confining her to a hospital bed for a year and requiring extensive physical therapy. The injuries resulted in increased sensitivity to light and sound, prompting her to gravitate toward softer musical genres including bossa nova, jazz, French chanson, and folk music. A physician suggested that music could aid her cognitive recovery, leading her to teach herself guitar and begin writing songs as personal therapy.

Gardot's professional career began in 2005 with the EP Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions, recorded from her bedside. She achieved critical acclaim with her 2007 debut album Worrisome Heart on Verve Records, which peaked at number two on Billboard's Traditional Jazz Albums chart. Known for her dusky, delicately nuanced vocal style and sophisticated interpretations of standards and original compositions, Gardot has built a loyal international fan base. She has released six studio albums including My One and Only Thrill (2009), The Absence (2012), Currency of Man (2015), Sunset in the Blue (2020), and Entre Eux Deux (2022), earning five Top Ten Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums and two number ones. Her work has drawn comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, and Nina Simone.
