Macbeth the Great

Biography

Patrick MacDonald, known professionally as Macbeth the Great, was born in Trinidad and became a prominent calypsonian and bandleader in New York City's Harlem scene during the 1940s. He made his first major mark singing with Gerald Clark's band at the Village Vanguard in 1940, where his style contrasted sharply with contemporaries like Sir Lancelot. Macbeth participated in the landmark 'Calypso at Midnight' concert at New York's Town Hall in 1946, organized by Alan Lomax, and subsequently formed his own twelve-piece orchestra, MacBeth's Calypso Band, which appeared in the film House-Rent Party with Lord Invader that same year.

His career flourished as he performed at Harlem Carnival balls and up and down the East Coast, with such high demand that his band occasionally split into two groups to fulfill engagements. Macbeth released recordings like 'Calypso Holiday' in 1961 on Time Records and shared stages with jazz greats, including Thelonious Monk in 1947 at the Village Vanguard. His music blended calypso with American swing influences, contributing to the calypso craze in the U.S.

Macbeth's legacy endures through his son, Ralph MacDonald, a Grammy-winning percussionist who began his career in his father's band and later worked with Harry Belafonte. Active primarily in the 1930s-1960s, Macbeth helped popularize calypso among American audiences, bridging Caribbean traditions with jazz and swing scenes in Harlem.

  • Appeared with Duke of Iron and Lord Invader in William P. Gottlieb's iconic 1946 photos from the 'Calypso at Midnight' concert.
