Gao Hong, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Poll

Biography

Gao Hong, born in 1964 in Luoyang, Henan, China, began her career as a professional pipa player at the age of 12, leaving her family to pursue music training. She graduated with honors from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied under pipa master Lin Shicheng, becoming a torchbearer of the Pudong style of pipa playing. This early prodigy status led to her establishing a reputation for blending traditional Chinese techniques with multicultural influences.

After moving to the United States, Gao Hong expanded her career as both a performer and composer, performing at prestigious venues like Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and with orchestras including the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Her compositional journey began with 'Flying Dragon' in 1997, supported by the American Composers Forum, evolving into concertos and overtures like 'Celebration.' In 2024, she recorded four original pipa concertos at Abbey Road Studios with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michael Poll, and performed as soloist with the South Netherlands Philharmonic, achieving viral success with videos garnering over 6 million Instagram views and 900 million on Chinese platforms.

Gao Hong's musical style fuses Pudong pipa traditions with Western orchestral elements, cross-cultural collaborations, and experiments in genres from classical to improvisation. She serves as professor of Chinese Musical Instruments at Carleton College, has received awards like the International Cultural Role Model Award, and was honored with 'Gao Hong Day' in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on April 3, 2022.
