Biography
Hikaru Utada, born January 19, 1983, in New York City, United States, grew up in Manhattan with Japanese parents: their father, Teruzane Utada, a record producer, and mother, Keiko Fuji, an enka singer. From a young age, Utada showed musical talent, joining the family group U^3 (also known as Cubic U), which released the album Star in 1993, peaking at number 33 in Japan but failing commercially in the U.S. In 1998, under the pseudonym Cubic U, they released the English album Precious, which also underperformed. Utada relocated to Tokyo that year to attend Seisen International School and the American School in Japan, signing with Toshiba-EMI and shifting to Japanese-language music at the label's request, leveraging their bilingual fluency.[1][2][4][5]
Utada's Japanese debut album First Love (1999) marked their breakthrough, blending J-pop, R&B, and dance-pop influences. Preceded by million-selling singles 'Automatic/time will tell' and 'Movin' on without you,' the album sold over 7 million copies in Japan (plus 3 million overseas), becoming the best-selling Japanese album ever. Follow-up Distance (2001) sold 4.47 million copies, and Deep River (2002) further solidified their status, with Utada pioneering a new wave of singer-songwriters distinct from idol pop. Their style featured introspective lyrics, R&B grooves, and emotional depth, reshaping J-pop standards.[1][3][4][6][7]
Utada's legacy endures as one of Japan's most influential artists, with record-breaking sales, drama tie-ins like 'First Love' and 'Flavor of Life,' and international forays including English albums Exodus (2004) and This Is the One (2009). They set sales benchmarks no other artist matched with three consecutive 3-million+ albums and continue releasing hits like Hatsukoi (2018), a nod to their debut.[1][5][6]
