Corey Ledet Zydeco & Black Magic

Biography

Corey Ledet was born and raised in Houston, Texas, spending his summers in the small Creole community of Parks, Louisiana, where he was immersed in Kouri-Vini language, Creole traditions, and zydeco music from a young age. His grandfather, Buchanan “Tbu” Ledet, a drummer who performed with zydeco legend Clifton Chenier, provided his earliest musical lessons, instilling a deep connection to the genre. By age ten, Ledet was drumming professionally for Wilbert Thibodeaux and the Zydeco Rascals, and by twelve, he backed his aunt, Rosie Ledet, appearing on at least five of her albums between 1994 and 2000, including the breakout Zydeco Sensation (1997).[1][2][3][5]

In 2003, at age 22, Ledet relocated to Louisiana full-time, transitioning from drums to accordion—the primary instrument in zydeco—and formed Corey Ledet Zydeco. His debut album 3 Years 2 Late (2004) marked the start of a prolific career blending traditional zydeco with funk, blues, soul, R&B, gospel, reggae, and modern innovations, earning him the nickname 'The Accordion Dragon.' Key releases include collaborations like Goin’ Down to Louisiana (2006) with Cedric Watson and Nothin’ But the Best (2012), which garnered a Grammy nomination. By 2025, he had released 16 albums as a bandleader, with Live in Alaska—recorded at the Anchorage Folk Festival—capturing his high-energy live performances.[1][2][3][4][6]

Ledet's style honors zydeco originators like Clifton Chenier, John Delafose, and Boozoo Chavis while pushing boundaries for younger audiences, incorporating diverse elements into danceable Creole rhythms. His family's history with icons like Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, and others underscores his deep roots, positioning him as both preserver and innovator of zydeco's legacy.[1][2][3][9]
