Biography
Balsam Range formed in 2007 in Haywood County, North Carolina — the mountain community of Clyde and Canton where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge. The band's name comes directly from the Great Balsam Range surrounding their home county (they dropped "Great" as a self-deprecating gesture). Five locals — Tim Surrett (bass, vocals), Caleb Smith (guitar, vocals), Marc Pruett (banjo), Buddy Melton (fiddle, vocals), and Darren Nicholson (mandolin) — came together simply wanting to play music, but early on drafted a list of career goals at a Canton steakhouse that they would go on to largely fulfill. Their debut album Marching Home (2007) notably featured legendary flatpicker Tony Rice as a guest, an extraordinary coup for a newly formed band.
Over 13 studio albums and nearly two decades of performing, Balsam Range became one of the most decorated acts in contemporary bluegrass, earning 13 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) awards. Their 2012 album Papertown (named for Canton's iconic paper mill) spent five consecutive months at No. 1 on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart and won IBMA Album of the Year 2013. Their 2016 release Mountain Voodoo won Album of the Year in 2017, and Aeonic (2019) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and remained there for 46 weeks. The band won IBMA Entertainer of the Year in both 2014 and 2018. Their lineup has seen changes over the years — Darren Nicholson departed in 2022, replaced by two-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year Alan Bibey, and founding fiddler Buddy Melton departed in January 2025, with veteran Don Rigsby touring with the band in his place.
Balsam Range's sound is rooted in the Scotch-Irish Appalachian musical heritage but draws freely from gospel, jazz, and classic rock. A defining strength is their rare multi-vocalist lineup — nearly every member takes lead vocals — producing rich multi-part harmonies that critics describe as "full of interesting surprises while fully rooted in classic bluegrass tradition." Beyond recording, the band has run their own Balsam Range Art of Music Festival at Lake Junaluska since 2016, generating an estimated $400,000+ annually for Haywood County. Tim Surrett received the IBMA Mentor of the Year award in 2014 for his work developing young artists, cementing the band's role not just as performers but as stewards of the bluegrass tradition.
