Biography
The Zawinul Syndicate was a jazz fusion band formed in 1988 by Austrian keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul, evolving directly from his previous group Weather Report. Zawinul, born Josef Erich Zawinul on July 7, 1932, in Vienna, Austria, sought to create a more groove-oriented sound without a saxophone player, emphasizing unusual grooves, driving rhythms, and influences from diverse world music cultures. He named the band 'Syndicate' to reflect its family-like closeness rather than a typical band structure, drawing on musicians from around the globe to synthesize jazz fusion with ethnic elements.
The band's debut album, The Immigrants (1988), featured bassist Abraham Laboriel, drummer Cornell Rochester, guitarist Scott Henderson, percussionist Muyungo Jackson, and vocalist/keyboardist Lynne Fiddmont. Subsequent releases like Black Water (1989) saw changes including Bill Summers and Bobby Thomas Jr. on percussion, with later lineups incorporating Weather Report alumni Victor Bailey and Manolo Badrena, as well as Etienne M’Bappe, Amit Chatterjee, Mario Joao, and Sabine Kabongo. The group toured extensively, building a global following with live energy captured on the Grammy-nominated World Tour (1998) and Faces & Places (2002), blending improvisation, funk, and international rhythms.
Following Zawinul's death from skin cancer on September 11, 2007, several Syndicate members reformed as The Syndicate to perform his music live, preserving his legacy in jazz fusion and world music innovation. The band's style transcended categories, influencing the fusion of jazz with global grooves and maintaining vitality over nearly two decades.
