Biography
The Fretliners are a progressive bluegrass quartet that emerged from the Colorado roots music scene, officially forming around 2022 after members had spent years performing separately in local bands. The band's origin story is marked by a defining moment when Dan Andree (fiddle), Tom Knowlton (guitar), Sam Parks (mandolin), and Taylor Shuck (bass) first played together around a single microphone in a barn, an experience that immediately convinced them of their musical chemistry and shared vision. Initially operating as a duo and then through different trio configurations, the band eventually settled on their current four-piece lineup and adopted the name The Fretliners after their first performance, committing to making music their primary focus.
The Fretliners achieved rapid recognition in the bluegrass community by winning both the Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass band competitions in summer 2023—a feat accomplished only once before in the history of these prestigious festivals. This success was followed by the release of their self-titled debut album in September 2023, which earned widespread critical acclaim for its originality, heartfelt lyricism, and balanced songwriting. The band's musical approach blends traditional bluegrass instrumentation with contemporary themes, moving beyond the genre's conventional focus on heartache and loss to explore modern struggles including mental health and relationship challenges.
Based in Lyons, Colorado, The Fretliners have become fixtures on major bluegrass festival stages across the Rocky Mountain region, including performances at Telluride Bluegrass, RockyGrass, and Rhythms on the Rio Music Festival. The band is characterized by its vocal-forward approach, with harmonies and lead vocals prominently featured throughout their original material. Each member brought diverse musical backgrounds to the group—Andree trained in classical violin, Knowlton played electric guitar, and Shuck performed electric bass in funk-based bands—yet their combined instrumentation creates a cohesive bluegrass sound. With a booking agent since February 2024, The Fretliners have begun expanding beyond the Colorado circuit with aspirations to tour nationally.
