Biography

River Eckert was born on October 9, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana — his name drawn directly from the Mississippi River at whose banks he entered the world. He grew up in the Uptown neighborhood, around the corner from the legendary Maple Leaf Bar, the son of Jake Eckert, guitarist with the New Orleans Suspects and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and a faculty member at Loyola University New Orleans. Immersed in live music culture from infancy, River began studying piano at age 3, starting with classical repertoire before his teachers recognized a natural aptitude for blues and jazz and redirected his training accordingly. He is currently a straight-A student at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts).

By age 14 River had made his New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival debut, appearing at the Children's Tent, RhythmPOURium, and Blues Tent in 2024 — his third Jazz Fest appearance came in 2025. He has performed at NOLA Funk Fest's main stage, been featured by Playing for Change performing "St. James Infirmary" and "Sunny Side of the Street," and shared stages with legends including Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, Cyril Neville, Irma Thomas, and Oteil Burbridge. In October 2024 he released his debut single "Pass That Torch" featuring Ivan Neville of Dumpstaphunk, followed by "Hey Hey Hey (Fi Nah Nay)" in February 2025 and "Painting Pictures" in April 2025. He completed his debut studio album, featuring contributions from George Porter Jr., Terence Higgins, Cornell Williams, and others, slated for release in 2026, with his first European tour booked for summer 2026.

OffBeat Magazine describes River as "a singer, pianist, composer and arranger steeped in his hometown's indigenous rhythm-and-blues and funk." His playing is rooted in the New Orleans piano lineage — the rolling, percussive, blues-drenched tradition of Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, and Art Neville. At 16, with a low Spotify popularity score and roughly 1,300 monthly listeners, his reach remains small, but the depth of his musical pedigree and the caliber of artists who have collaborated with him suggest a figure of unusual promise in the continuity of New Orleans piano tradition. He also helped score a documentary film about New Orleans while still in high school.
