Biography
Nilza Costa is a Brazilian singer and songwriter born in Salvador, Bahia, a city deeply influenced by African ancestral rhythms. Her passion for music was nurtured by her Afro-indigenous heritage grandmother, who introduced her to the Yoruba culture through Candomblé religious services. Nilza began performing as a solo voice in the choir of the Church of San Lazzaro and in the Olodum's scenic choir. Since 2006, she has resided in Italy, where she has collaborated with exceptional instrumentalists from the Italian jazz scene, enriching her artistic history with numerous live shows across Europe. Her music combines ancestral African rhythms with popular Brazilian cultural forms like Candomblé, Capoeira, Samba Duro, Maculelê, and Cantigas de Roda. In 2021, she released her third album, 'Le notti di San Patrizio', featuring eight original tracks that showcase her deep and dark voice. Her debut album, 'Revolution, Rivoluzione, Revolução', blends Afro jazz with Samba, Blues, and voodoo atmospheres, reflecting her journey through cultural and spiritual themes. Nilza's work is a testament to her role as a spokeswoman for her people's revolution, using music and spirituality as a path to emancipation.
