Biography
Meriheini Luoto is a Finnish composer and performer based in Helsinki, specializing in avant-garde folk music on violin, nyckelharpa, electronics, and vocals. She began playing classical violin at age four in a small town in Southern Finland and discovered her passion for ensemble playing through early folk music courses like Näppäri, where she encountered group performances with hundreds of young players. Continuing through Sibelius Upper Secondary School and the Sibelius Academy's Junior Academy, she earned an M.Mus. in folk music, forming key ensembles like the contemporary folk group Hohka, which was active for 11 years, and embracing experimental approaches including free improvisation, singing, and music technology.
