Brian Blade Fellowship

Biography

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band is a jazz ensemble formed in 1997 by drummer and composer Brian Blade and pianist Jon Cowherd, who first met in 1988 while studying at Loyola University in New Orleans. The band's core quintet includes saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler, bassist Chris Thomas, and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel (with Jeff Parker and pedal steel guitarist Dave Easley in earlier configurations). The Fellowship Band emerged as an innovative force in contemporary jazz, blending folkloric references, spiritual concerns, jazz modality, and roots music influences into a distinctive sound that reflects the members' Louisiana and Kentucky heritage. The band has released seven albums spanning from their 1998 self-titled debut through 2023's Kings Highway, establishing themselves as proponents of music that straddles the rock and jazz worlds while showcasing Blade's understated yet fierce drumming style and original compositions.

The band's name reflects Blade's spiritual background—he grew up in the church where his father served as pastor—and was chosen to embody the concept of fellowship and communal spirit in music. Throughout their career, the Fellowship Band has evolved away from overt traditional references while maintaining them as undercurrents, creating what Blade describes as 'a chunk of America' that defies easy categorization. Their albums, including Perceptual (2000), Season of Changes (2008), Landmarks (2014), and Body and Shadow (2017), have consistently demonstrated the band's ability to synthesize diverse influences—from John Coltrane and Duke Ellington to Joni Mitchell—into cohesive artistic statements. The Fellowship Band represents Blade's primary creative vehicle as a bandleader, complementing his extensive work as a session and touring drummer for numerous acclaimed artists.

Fun Facts

  • Brian Blade named the Fellowship Band 'The Fellowship Band' specifically to reflect the spiritual concept of fellowship and community, drawing from his upbringing in the church where his father has served as pastor since 1961.
  • The genesis of the Fellowship Band began ten years before their first record was released; Blade and Jon Cowherd met in 1988 at Loyola University in New Orleans and spent years playing duo improvisations together before formally establishing the band in 1997.
  • Blade's creative contributions to Wayne Shorter's quartet—which also featured bassist John Patitucci and pianist Danilo Pérez—were frequently considered a key component of the group's creativity, with the ensemble becoming widely revered by jazz critics for their 'near-telepathic' musical symbiosis.
  • The Fellowship Band's instrumentation was deliberately chosen to blend diverse influences including John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Joni Mitchell, filtered through the members' personal experiences and regional heritage from Louisiana and Kentucky, creating what Blade describes as music that incorporates folk song-like and roots music elements alongside jazz improvisation.
