Keller Williams & The Keels

Biography

Keller Williams, born February 4, 1970, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, began playing guitar in his early teens, initially influenced by punk rock bands like Black Flag, Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Dead Kennedys, before expanding into melodic college rock such as The Cure, The Smiths, and R.E.M. He started performing in regional bands during high school and college but transitioned to solo acoustic gigs, realizing he could earn comparable income without a band, which led him to incorporate looping technology for organic, dance-oriented grooves he called 'acoustic dance music' (ADM). His debut album, Freek, arrived in 1994, establishing him as a one-man jam band known for innovative live performances blending folk, electronica, and improvisation.

Williams' career evolved through diverse projects, including forming Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll and Sipe in 2007 (initially WMDs), featuring Jeff Sipe on drums, Keith Moseley on bass, and Gibb Droll on lead guitar, culminating in the live album LIVE. In 2004, he launched Keller & The Keels with award-winning flatpicker Larry Keel and bassist Jenny Keel, creating 'Appalachian Psychedelic Bluegrass.' The trio released Grass (2006), Thief (2010), Pick (2012) with The Travelin' McCourys, and Speed (2019), mixing originals and covers in a psychedelic bluegrass style. Other ventures include Rhythm Devils with Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart (2010), reggae-funk band Kdubalicious (2011), and KWahtro (2016) with Droll, Danton Boller, and Rodney Holmes, showcasing his penchant for collaboration and genre fusion.

Williams' legacy lies in his relentless innovation, releasing over 25 studio albums by 2019, from solo looping spectacles to bluegrass reinterpretations, while maintaining roots in acoustic guitar and vocals, as seen in RAW (2017). Genres like newgrass, bluegrass, and jam band define his Spotify profile (popularity 17), influencing the jam and progressive bluegrass scenes through boundary-pushing projects that prioritize fun, skill, and organic evolution.
