james houlahan

Biography

James Houlahan is a singer-songwriter originally from Concord, Massachusetts, who came to music somewhat later than most — starting piano at age 8, switching to guitar at 13, and not recording his debut album until age 31. Before embarking on his solo career, he played lead guitar in Boston rock bands Dogs on Television and The Jody Grind through the mid-2000s. He released two albums during his Boston years before relocating to Topanga, California in 2012, where he has remained based and continued to develop his craft, releasing five more albums from the Los Angeles area.

Houlahan's music sits at the intersection of dark folk and eclectic Americana, rooted in narrative storytelling. His soft-spoken, unvarnished voice draws comparisons to John Prine, Fred Neil, Jackson Browne, and Tom Waits, balancing stark, bleak imagery with moments of unexpected buoyancy. His seventh album, On a Wing (2026, OOB Records), is a concept record built around birds, flight, and imagination — a theme he noticed emerging organically over two to three years of writing before consciously shaping the album around it. His music has also reached film and television, appearing in the 2017 feature Little Pink House starring Catherine Keener.

A self-described late bloomer and dedicated craftsman, Houlahan has toured extensively including multi-week runs in Germany, and has built a loyal following in the American folk and Americana underground. He has consistently collaborated with an impressive circle of musicians, including Scarlet Rivera (Bob Dylan's violinist from Desire), drummer Danny Frankel (Lou Reed, Fiona Apple), and producer Fernando Perdomo across four albums. Glide Magazine has described him as "near the top of must-see and hear indie singer-songwriters."
