Irreversible Entanglements

Biography

Irreversible Entanglements is an American free jazz collective formed in 2015 as a quintet blending improvisation, spoken word poetry, and activism. The group originated spontaneously at a 'Musicians Against Police Brutality' event in Brooklyn following the NYPD shooting of Akai Gurley, where initial members saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), and bassist Luke Stewart performed together, later joined by trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes for their debut recording session at Seizure’s Palace.[1][2][3] Members hail from diverse scenes: Ayewa and Neuringer from Philadelphia's noise-hardcore-experimental milieu, Stewart from Washington D.C., and Navarro and Holmes as recent New England Conservatory graduates, connecting through shared bills and activism like Books Through Bars.[1][2][5]

Their self-titled debut album in 2017, released on International Anthem and Don Giovanni, earned acclaim from The Wire, The Quietus, NPR Music, and Stereogum's Best Jazz of the 2010s. Subsequent releases include Who Sent You? (2020), Open the Gates (2021), and Protect Your Light (2023, Impulse! Records), praised by Magnet, AllMusic, and NPR's Jazz Critics Poll for their rhythm-driven free jazz infused with Ayewa's searing narrations on Black trauma, survival, and power.[1][4][5] The band's style merges deep free jazz improvisation with experimental punk energy and social commitment, maintaining chemistry despite members' scattered locations (Philadelphia, D.C., New York, Rochester, Brooklyn, Los Angeles) and individual projects.[2][5]

Irreversible Entanglements has built a legacy as a 'liberation-oriented' force in contemporary jazz, celebrated for thrilling live performances and albums that capture 'fire music' urgency. Their enduring camaraderie, rooted in mutual admiration and trust, sustains the group amid solo pursuits, with Ayewa now teaching at USC Thornton School of Music.[1][5][7]
