Foy Vance

Biography

Foy Vance is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter born in 1974 in Bangor, County Down, Ireland. His early life was marked by geographic displacement—his father took the family to Oklahoma when Foy was an infant, establishing a base there before the family returned to Belfast during the height of 'the troubles.' Upon returning to Northern Ireland, Vance joined the soul band Soul Truth as lead singer before turning his focus to acoustic guitar and original songwriting. A transformative moment occurred in January 1999 while performing at a gig on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, where Vance experienced what he describes as a moment of unprecedented transcendence on stage. The following morning, he learned that his father had suffered a fatal heart attack that same night. This experience catalyzed an extraordinary creative awakening—his previous difficulty with songwriting vanished, and within eight months he wrote enough material for four albums. Two demo recordings, 'Gabriel and the Vagabond' and 'Homebird,' were featured in the second season of the US television drama Grey's Anatomy, providing early career momentum.

Vance released his debut album, Hope, on 21 July 2007 via Wurdamouth Records, earning critical acclaim within the UK. His subsequent releases demonstrated artistic growth and industry recognition: The Melrose EP (2012) featured music for the Academy Award-winning film The Shore, with the lead track 'Be the Song' appearing in television shows including Private Practice, House, Arrow, Haven, and Constantine. His second full-length album, Joy of Nothing (2013), produced by Michael Keeney and featuring vocal contributions from Bonnie Raitt and Ed Sheeran, won the inaugural Northern Ireland Music Prize. The Wild Swan (2016), his third studio album produced by Jacquire King and released through Ed Sheeran's Gingerbread Man Records, marked a significant commercial moment, with Vance supporting both Elton John and Josh Groban on tour dates. Subsequent albums including From Muscle Shoals (2019), To Memphis (2019), Signs of Life (2021), and The Wake represent his continued artistic evolution. In January 2024, Vance won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics alongside Ed Sheeran and Max Martin for 'A Beautiful Game,' featured in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.

Fun Facts

  • Vance's debut album Hope contains a hidden recording of his daughter Ella singing 'You Are My Sunshine' at the end of the track 'Two Shades of Hope,' and she later appeared in the music video for 'Joy of Nothing.'
  • Ed Sheeran's father brought a young Ed (age 13) to Foy Vance's gigs, establishing a relationship that would later result in Sheeran signing Vance to his Gingerbread Man Records label and collaborating on multiple projects including the Emmy-winning song 'A Beautiful Game.'
  • Vance uses alternative guitar tunings in his compositions, such as the tuning CGDGCe for the song 'Indiscriminate Act of Kindness,' which was featured in a UK television commercial for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
  • During a tour supporting Ed Sheeran early in Sheeran's career, Vance spent more time 'bombing' than performing his own material due to Sheeran's enthusiastic teenage fanbase, an experience he recalls with humor.
