Fat Freddy s Drop

Biography

Fat Freddy's Drop is a seven-piece dub and reggae band formed in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1999 by musicians from various local acts, initially as a jam band experimenting with live instrumentation during DJ sets by Chris Faiumu (DJ Fitchie or DJ Mu). Emerging from Wellington's vibrant music scene, the group drew from influences across black music genres including soul, dub, jazz, rhythm and blues, techno, and more, with key early tracks like 'Midnight Marauders' and 'Hope' gaining traction through local radio and DJ networks. Their breakthrough came in 2003 when 'Midnight Marauders' spread internationally via German labels, leading to European tours and solidifying their reputation for euphoric, improvised live performances honed over years on the road.[1][2][3][4]

Fun Facts

  • The band's name references a piece of blotter art circulating in New Zealand's late 1990s dance scene and possibly a comic cat character with bad habits suiting their early bohemian vibe.[1][6]
  • Their debut studio album Based on a True Story (2005) went gold on release day without marketing, topped NZ charts, and became the highest-selling album by a national artist in history.[1][3]
  • They won Album of the Year at Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 Worldwide Awards in 2005, voted by over 20,000 listeners, after dominating NZ Music Awards.[1]
  • A 2006 performance at Detroit's Movement festival fused their sound with hi-tek soul and analog techno influences.[4]
