Denitia

Biography

Denitia Odigie is a singer-songwriter and producer born and raised outside Houston, Texas, who has built a diverse career spanning soul, R&B, folk, indie rock, and country music. She grew up immersed in multiple musical traditions—her father introduced her to country artists like George Strait, George Jones, Reba McEntire, and Alan Jackson, while her grandmother favored Charlie Pride and Patsy Cline; her mother played soul legends like Al Green, Smokey Robinson, and The Temptations. She taught herself piano and guitar from her family's trailer in the woods and performed in church choirs as a child. After attending college in Nashville, she moved to Brooklyn where she met musician Brian Marc and formed the futuristic electro-soul duo Denitia and Sene before eventually pursuing a solo career.

Denitia's solo journey reflects a deliberate artistic evolution and geographic odyssey. She released her debut album Vitality in 2010, followed by years of touring, recording, and songwriting across multiple genres. After realizing her life in New York's Hudson Valley was no longer serving her, she made a significant pivot back to Nashville around 2022, coinciding with the release of her album Highways. This move marked a creative return to her roots, embracing country and Americana influences while maintaining her distinctive indie sensibility. Her 2024 album Sunset Drive, produced with longtime collaborator Brad Allen Williams, showcases 12 songs that blend acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and her "sweet, sparkling voice" to create introspective narratives about escape, home, and new beginnings.

Denitia has achieved substantial recognition within the Americana and country music communities. Her music has been featured in films including Nanny and The Invitation, and in television series such as Better Things (FX), Broad City (Comedy Central), Dear White People (Netflix), Shrinking (Apple TV+), and The Terminal List (Amazon). She earned a residency with the Black Opry and WXPN in 2023, was selected for CMT's 2024 Next Women of Country class, and made her Grand Ole Opry debut in summer 2024. She has toured extensively with the Black Opry Revue and shared stages with artists including Amythyst Kiah, Joy Oladokun, and Allison Russell. With millions of streams on Spotify and over 15 years in the music industry, Denitia continues to establish herself as a versatile artist reimagining what it means to be home through her evolving musical portrait.
