Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours

Biography

Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours are a New Orleans-based Cajun ensemble rooted in a father-son partnership. Cameron Dupuy grew up in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, as the son of guitarist and vocalist Michael Dupuy. Though he began playing guitar around age 8, the defining moment of his musical life came during the Hurricane Katrina evacuation in 2005, when his family sheltered in Lafayette, Louisiana. There, Cameron played an accordion that had been used to record a Grammy-winning album by Cajun legend Jimmy Breaux — a chance encounter that ignited a lifelong obsession. He returned home, picked up his father's unused accordion, and "hasn't put it down since," according to Michael Dupuy.

By age 11, Cameron was already studying the repertoire of Cajun masters Marc Savoy, Aldus Roger, and Belton Richard. A breakout performance at The Liberty Theatre in April 2010 earned a standing ovation and caught the attention of Cajun music scholar Dr. Barry Ancelet, who personally invited the young band to perform at the prestigious Festival Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette. As a teenager, Cameron joined the youth Cajun ensemble Huval, Dupuy & Fuselier, which released a self-titled album on the storied Swallow Records label in 2012 and toured Canada. That group eventually evolved into Cameron Dupuy & the Cajun Troubadours. The band built their following through regular residencies, including twice-weekly sets at the Tropical Isle Bayou Club on Bourbon Street and performances in Concourse C of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Their debut self-titled album was released on Camo Records on March 29, 2020, featuring 15 tracks, more than half of which are instrumentals. In November 2020, the album received a Grammy nomination for Best Regional Roots Music Album — a milestone the father-son duo celebrated together. OffBeat Magazine declared that "Cameron Dupuy should be on every list of top Cajun accordionists of all time." An eight-time Cajun accordion contest champion, Cameron's playing is marked by sprinting scales, dizzying trills, and a New Orleans-inflected approach that absorbs elements of mambo, funk, bluegrass, and honky-tonk while remaining anchored in traditional Cajun waltz and two-step. Note: Spotify's genre tags of "texas country" and "red dirt" appear to be a metadata misattribution — all credible sources consistently describe the band as playing traditional and progressive Cajun music.
