Better Than Ezra

Biography

Better Than Ezra is an American alternative rock band formed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1988 by vocalist/guitarist Kevin Griffin, bassist Tom Drummond, lead guitarist Joel Rundell, and drummer Cary Bonnecaze while they were students at Louisiana State University (LSU). Griffin, who had earlier formed a high school band called Aces Up in 1980, bonded with Drummond over influences like R.E.M., Let's Active, and Drivin N Cryin. The band debuted at Murphy's nightclub in Baton Rouge after Griffin tricked his way onto the schedule, building a regional following through house parties, fraternity shows, and extensive touring. They released a demo tape in 1988 (Chime Street Demo) and their cassette-only debut album Surprise in 1990, just as Griffin graduated from LSU.[1][2][3][6][8]

Tragedy struck in August 1990 when lead guitarist Joel Rundell died by suicide, prompting a brief hiatus. Griffin, Drummond, and Bonnecaze reformed as a trio by late 1990, continuing to play Southern U.S. gigs. Their breakthrough came with the 1993 independent release of Deluxe on Swell Records, featuring the hit 'Good,' which gained radio play and led to a 1995 signing with Elektra Records for national re-release. This propelled them to alt-rock success in the mid-1990s, followed by Friction, Baby! (1996). Lineup changes ensued, with Bonnecaze leaving in 1996 (replaced by Travis McNabb until 2009), but Griffin and Drummond have remained core members for over 35 years, maintaining a loyal fanbase known as 'Ezralites' amid the 1990s alt-rock wave.[1][2][3][5][6]

The band's musical style blends jangle-pop, college rock, and Southern rock influences with Griffin's melodic songwriting and introspective lyrics. Despite peak commercial success with Deluxe, they sustained longevity through touring and releases, embodying unbridled joy in music-making without fading like many contemporaries.[1][6]

  • After lead guitarist Joel Rundell's 1990 suicide, the remaining members briefly pursued other paths—Griffin to Santa Fe, others back to LSU—before reuniting.[2][3]
  • No one knows the exact origin of the band name 'Better Than Ezra,' as noted in early accounts.[4]
