Biography
William Parker, born in 1951 (or 1952 per some sources) in the Bronx, New York, began his musical journey early, playing along with his father's record collection at age five and entering the New York jazz scene by 1971 at venues like Studio We, Studio Rivbea, and Hilly’s on The Bowery. By age 20, he studied bass with masters including Richard Davis, Art Davis, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Garrison, Wilbur Ware, and others, quickly becoming a sought-after bassist in the free jazz and loft jazz movement of the 1970s, performing with pioneers like Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry, Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, Billy Higgins, and Sunny Murray.[1][2][4][5]
Parker's career evolved in the 1980s and 1990s through key collaborations, notably with Cecil Taylor and David S. Ware, and he began leading ensembles in 1993 with In Order to Survive sextet and 1994's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. His style blends free jazz, avant-garde improvisation, and broader influences, incorporating multi-instrumentation (bass, shakuhachi, double reeds, tuba, donso ngoni, gembri) and composition for large ensembles, voice, and multimedia. Albums like O’Neal’s Porch (2001) with his quartet featuring Hamid Drake marked a shift toward universal tonality, earning praise as the most brilliant free jazz bassist and a leader in avant-garde jazz; he has recorded over 150 albums, published six books, and received the 2013 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.[1][3][5][7]
As composer, educator, and activist, Parker has shaped modern creative music through projects like Raining on the Moon, Stan’s Hat Flapping in the Wind, and premieres such as Universal Tonality (2002) and Essence of Ellington (2012), while mentoring young musicians at institutions like Bennington College and residencies worldwide, leaving a profound legacy in jazz innovation and community building.[1][2][5]
