Biography
Wayne Horvitz, born September 1, 1955, emerged as a pivotal figure in the avant-garde and free jazz scenes, initially shaped by his discovery of Cecil Taylor's music at age 16, which inspired him to explore non-traditional piano approaches blending jazz, blues, and experimental sounds. Rising in New York's Downtown scene during the 1980s, he became a key player at the Knitting Factory, curating jazz series featuring luminaries and contributing to John Zorn's Naked City, while forming bands like The President, known for prog-tinged jazz rock. His compositional work extended to theater, dance, and film, with commissions from the Kitchen, Kronos Quartet, and others, including ballets choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Paul Taylor.
Relocating to Seattle in 1988 amid the grunge era, Horvitz founded diverse ensembles such as Pigpen for free-jazz and fusion, Ponga with Bobby Previte, Skerik, and Dave Palmer for rhythmic improvisation, Zony Mash for groove-centric jazz funk, and its acoustic counterpart Sweeter Than the Day featuring Timothy Young, Keith Lowe, and Eric Eagle. He married singer-songwriter Robin Holcomb in New York and later opened The Royal Room in Seattle's Columbia City in 2011, a venue for eclectic performances including his conduction technique inspired by Butch Morris. As an adjunct professor at Cornish College of the Arts, Horvitz continues leading groups like The Snowghost Trio, Gravitas Quartet, and The Golden Road, which interprets early Grateful Dead music.
Horvitz's style defies eclecticism labels, juxtaposing swing rhythms with avant-garde elements, blues with Stockhausen-like influences from the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and spanning labels like Nonesuch, Tzadik, and Songlines; his voluminous discography as leader and sideman underscores a legacy of innovation across jazz, rock, classical, and electronics.
