Biography
Tyler Gregory Okonma, known professionally as Tyler, The Creator, was born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, California. He rose to prominence in the late 2000s as the leader and co-founder of the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA), which he started in 2007 with friends like Hodgy, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies. Tyler released his debut solo mixtape Bastard in 2009, praised by critics, followed by his breakthrough studio album Goblin in 2011 via XL Recordings, featuring the viral hit 'Yonkers' whose music video won an MTV Video Music Award. His early work was characterized by dark, shocking, and obscene lyrics over minimalist instrumentals.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Tyler's career evolved significantly starting with Wolf (2013), incorporating jazz, soul, and R&B influences, leading to mainstream success with albums like Flower Boy (2017), Igor (2019)—his first Billboard 200 number-one—and Call Me If You Get Lost (2021), both earning Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. He has since released Chromakopia (2024) and Don't Tap the Glass (2025), both topping charts. Beyond music, Tyler is a multifaceted artist: record producer, director, fashion designer with brands Golf Wang (2011) and Le Fleur, and founder of the annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival since 2012. His accolades include two Grammys, a BRIT Award, an MTV VMA, and three BET Hip Hop Awards.[1][2][3]
Tyler's musical style has transitioned from raw underground hip-hop to genre-blending innovation, influencing alternative hip-hop and extending into fashion, film, and visual art. He designs cover art, clothing, and merchandise, directs videos, and has appeared in projects like Loiter Squad (2012–2014), Jackass Forever (2022), and Piece by Piece (2024). His reinventions have cemented him as a cultural icon with a devoted fanbase.[2][3][4]
