Tunde Mabadu

Biography

Tunde Mabadu is a Nigerian saxophonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader from Lagos whose recorded output captures a rare moment in West African music history. No biographical record of his early life has surfaced in any public source — even dedicated collectors describe him as "unknown to even the most knowledgeable" — but his Yoruba-language song titles and his work with Lagos-based labels firmly places him in southwestern Nigeria's vibrant 1970s music scene. He emerged at a time when DECCA West Africa's Afrodisia imprint was the commercial engine behind some of Nigeria's most adventurous recordings.

His debut album, Bisu (1978), released under the name Tunde Mabadu & His Sunrise on DECCA West Africa's Blackspot sub-label, is a striking document of "pure African style": deep vocals over wah-wah rhythm guitar, intricate horn arrangements, and unusual synthesizer textures — including the nine-minute psychedelic saxophone showcase "Blue Bird (Instrumental)." His follow-up, Viva Disco (1980), appeared on Afrodisia and pivoted toward the dance floor with heavy disco-boogie grooves, funky horn sections, and a more polished production sensibility. Original pressings of Viva Disco became highly sought collector items, fetching over £500 before UK label Mr Bongo reissued the album in 2018. Bisu was similarly reissued in 2022 by Italian label Afrodelic.

Mabadu's legacy, though long buried, has been steadily rehabilitated by the global reissue market. His inclusion in Strut Records' landmark compilation Nigeria 70 – Sweet Times: Afro-Funk, Highlife & Juju from 1970s Lagos (2011) confirmed his place in the canonical story of Lagos's golden era. He recorded at a pivotal industry moment: by 1981, just one year after Viva Disco, DECCA divested from Afrodisia and the label became 100% Nigerian-owned. Today Mabadu is recognized as an obscure but significant voice in Nigerian disco-boogie and Afro-funk, his two albums now essential listening for collectors of rare African groove.
