Biography
Trevor Watson is a Southwest Virginia-born bluegrass banjo player and vocalist who has spent more than two decades quietly building a reputation as one of the genre's most respected sidemen. He began playing banjo at age 8, on a small-scale instrument his father built for him, and developed his craft in the rich musical tradition of the Virginia mountains before earning a degree from Virginia Tech. His early professional career took him to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he joined the cast of The Carolina Opry, establishing a foundation as a stage performer.
Watson went on to spend roughly fifteen years as a central member of Lou Reid & Carolina, one of the IBMA award circuit's consistently recognized acts, cementing his reputation as a reliable and technically gifted banjoist. A close friendship and musical partnership with singer-songwriter Shannon Slaughter — spanning more than 25 years since their college days — saw Watson appear on nearly every Slaughter solo album released over that period. Slaughter has called him "one of my favorite banjo players for 25 years," noting his ability to command virtually any banjo style. In 2015, Watson stepped into a particularly high-profile role, filling in for the legendary Ben Eldridge of The Seldom Scene for approximately six months during Eldridge's transition to retirement.
Despite his long career as a sideman and collaborator, Watson released his debut solo album, Out of the Shadows, in November 2023 on his own imprint, Banjotrev Music. The 12-track record featured an all-star supporting cast including fiddler Aubrey Haynie, mandolinist Ron Inscore, and vocalist Shawn Lane, and was received warmly by the bluegrass press. The album's title is a fitting summary of Watson's arc — a consummate ensemble player finally stepping into his own spotlight after a career's worth of invaluable work behind the scenes. Note: his Spotify genre listing as "comedy" appears to be a platform mislabeling; Watson is a traditional bluegrass artist.
