Biography
Julio César 'Tito' Rojas López, known as 'El Gallo Salsero' (The Salsa Rooster), was born on June 14, 1955, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, on the island's eastern coast. Raised there, he received his primary and secondary education while developing a passion for singing salsa tunes with family and friends. His professional career began in 1975 as a singer with Pedro Conga's International Orchestra, followed by stints as lead singer with Conjunto Borincuba under Justo Betancourt, where he contributed to the hit album Con Amor in 1978, and a brief time with the Fania All-Stars, featuring the song 'El Campesino'.[2][4][7]
Rojas continued with Puerto Rican Power in the late 1980s, scoring hits like salsa versions of 'Noche de Bodas' and 'Quiereme Tal Como Soy'. Launching his solo career in 1990, he released albums such as Sensual, Condename (earning Lo Nuestro nominations in 1993), and the breakthrough Por Propio Derecho in 1995, which went double platinum, topped Billboard Tropical Airplay with 'Esperándote', and won him the Paoli Prize for Best Salsa Artist and an ACE Award. His style blended traditional salsa rhythms with modern elements, powerful vocals, and themes of love and heartbreak, also incorporating merengue, as seen in later hits like 'Por Mujeres Como Tú' from Alegrías y Penas (1999).[2][3][4]
Over four decades, Rojas released over 40 albums, earned three Latin Grammy nominations for Best Salsa Album (Rompiendo Noches, Quiero Llegar a la Casa, Un Gallo Para la Historia), and charted on Billboard over 50 times. He passed away from a heart attack on December 26, 2020, in Humacao, leaving a prolific legacy as a salsa icon who inspired generations across Latin America and the US.[2][3][4]
