Biography

The Devonns are a Chicago-based soul band formed in 2016 by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mathew Ajjarapu. After dropping out of med school and finding himself unemployed and drifting, Ajjarapu immersed himself in music, drawing inspiration from underground soul hits and crate-digging discoveries. He assembled a quartet with some of Chicago's top musicians, initially aiming for 50s-style doo-wop reminiscent of The Flamingos, but their sound quickly evolved into 70s soul during their first practice, blending rich vocal harmonies, reverb, and influences like Wilson Pickett.[2][3][7]

Led by Ajjarapu's distinctive voice and romantic lyrics, the band fuses Chicago soul heritage with Motown delicacy, as showcased on their self-titled debut album. This record features eight originals and two covers, including a reorchestrated version of Leroy Hutson's 1970s ballad 'So in Love With You,' highlighting sleek harmonies and elegant arrangements shaped by icons like Al Green. Their music reflects deep roots in the city's soul legacy, with labels and sounds that Ajjarapu uncovered through years of digging.[2][3]

Classified under northern soul on platforms like Spotify, The Devonns continue to evoke the sensual, devoted love archetype of classic soul while paying homage to their hometown's gritty, orchestral tradition. Though still emerging with low mainstream popularity, their debut stands as a love letter to Chicago soul, earning praise for its exquisite fusion and flawless execution.[2]
