Biography
Tasche de la Rocha, born in Portland, Oregon, had a difficult upbringing before moving to New Orleans, where the city's vibrant street culture profoundly shaped her musical journey. At age 15, she first visited with the circus, sparking her initial songwriting, and later returned to busk on streets like Decatur, learning rhythm from local musicians who encouraged her to infuse groove into her initially melancholic tunes. Adopting the confident 'Gold Rose' persona, she self-released her debut album Gold Rose in 2017, produced with collaborator Joseph Faison after years of 4-track recordings and street performances that honed her songwriting and vocal style.[1][2][4]
Transitioning to Tasche and the Psychedelic Roses—an eight-piece ensemble blending psych-rock, doo-wop, punk, grunge, new wave, and post-punk—she developed a heavier, more expansive sound. Countless live shows refined their material, culminating in their self-titled sophomore album recorded at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa during the pandemic with producer Eric Heigle. This release, dropped on Halloween, drew from a collage of influences and allowed her to focus intensely, transforming personal tragedies into rhythmic, dark-humored psych-dance tracks.[1][2]
Her style features raw intensity via vintage tube amps and spring reverb, multidimensional instrumentation, impressive vocal range from gentle croons to tattered inflections, and themes of fucked-up subjects lightened for subliminal impact. Active in New Orleans' DIY and traditional scenes, she evolved from solo busker to band leader, earning local acclaim despite early recording challenges.[2][5]
