Syran Mbenza, Samba Mapangala

Biography

Syran Mbenza (born May 31, 1950) is a Congolese guitarist originally from Kinshasa (formerly Leopoldville) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who has been based in Paris since the early 1980s. He began his professional musical career in the late 1960s, initially playing in local Kinshasa bands before turning professional across 1970s Zaire. His breakthrough came through his partnership with Congolese star Sam Mangwana in the African All Stars (1978-1979), where he played mi-solo (half-solo) guitar, earning recognition across Congolese music circles for his work on Mangwana's 1979 pan-African hit "Maria Tebbo." After settling in Paris in the early 1980s, Mbenza became a first-call session musician on the Paris music scene, helping drive the rise of soukous and zouk while recording prolifically as a solo artist and with various ensembles.

Mbenza is best known as a founding member of Les Quatre Étoiles (The Four Stars), a popular soukous supergroup formed in 1982 with singers Nyboma and Wuta Mayi, which released seven studio albums and three live albums through the mid-1990s and performed as recently as 2010. In 2000, he co-founded Kékélé, an acoustic Congolese rumba revival band that played slow-tempo music reminiscent of the 1950s-1970s era, in reaction to the direction of 1990s Congolese music. Throughout his five-decade career spanning multiple continents, Mbenza has been described as one of the greatest guitar players of Africa. In 2025, at age 75, he released the album "Rumba Africa" after a 16-year hiatus, demonstrating his continued relevance in African music.

Fun Facts

  • In 2005, BBC broadcaster Andy Kershaw remarked that 'Eric Clapton isn't fit to tune his strings' when describing Mbenza's stature as a guitarist, underscoring his elite status among Africa's most acclaimed musicians.
  • Mbenza played the mi-solo (half-solo) guitar in the African All Stars, a specialized role in Congolese music that sits between solo and rhythm guitars, which became a signature aspect of his musical identity.
  • After a 16-year hiatus from recording, Mbenza celebrated his 75th birthday in 2025 with the release of the album 'Rumba Africa,' demonstrating his continued creative vitality decades into his career.
  • Mbenza co-founded Kékélé in 2000 as a deliberate artistic reaction to 1990s Congolese music trends, with the band explicitly reviving the acoustic rumba style of the 1950s-1970s because, as he explained, 'There were no more songs, no more melodies.'
