Sweetback

Biography

Sweetback is an English band formed in 1994 by core members of the band Sade—guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman, bassist Paul Denman, and keyboardist Andrew Hale—during a hiatus following Sade's Love Deluxe World Tour. Without frontwoman Sade Adu, the trio created a side project blending dubwise R&B, neo-soul, acid jazz, trip-hop, and downtempo elements, which they described as 'global soul music.' Their sound featured rich ambience, swirling textures from live instruments like piano, saxophone, and synthesizers, and deep sub-bass grooves, often with instrumental tracks or guest vocalists replacing a single lead singer.

The band's self-titled debut album, released on October 14, 1996, showcased high-profile American guest vocalists including Amel Larrieux, Maxwell, Leroy Osborne (Sade's backing vocalist), and rapper Bahamadia. Tracks like 'Gaze' explored psychedelic R&B territory, while instrumentals such as 'Chord' highlighted live instrumentation mimicking sample-based production. Co-productions with figures like Toshio Nakanishi added eclectic flair. Four years later, in 2004, they released a second album featuring Canadian singer/trumpeter Ivana Santilli, incorporating hip-hop beats and sub-bass that influenced Sade's 2000 album Lovers Rock.

Sweetback remains an underrated extension of the Sade universe, praised for its atmospheric innovation but lesser-known due to the band's sporadic output and reliance on guest artists. Their work bridged 1990s genres, contributing to neo-soul's evolution without achieving mainstream solo success.

Fun Facts

  • Sweetback's debut featured no single lead vocalist, instead rotating high-profile guests from neo-soul and hip-hop scenes.
  • Instrumental track 'Chord' sounds like MPC-sampled production but was played entirely live with piano, sax, and synths.
  • Their music directly shaped Sade's Lovers Rock, incorporating Sweetback's deep sub-bass and hip-hop swung beats.
