Steve Kuhn, Gary McFarland

Biography

Steve Kuhn (born March 24, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York) and Gary McFarland (born October 23, 1933) were prominent figures in 1960s jazz, connected through their collaboration on the landmark album The October Suite. Kuhn began classical piano lessons at age five, influenced by his father's jazz records, and later studied at Harvard University before attending the Lenox School of Music, where he associated with innovators like Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Gary McFarland, Bill Evans, and George Russell. McFarland, an 'adult prodigy,' discovered jazz in the army, learning trumpet, trombone, piano, and vibes; he was self-taught as a composer-arranger, inspired by Gil Evans, and gained recognition for his orchestral jazz arrangements with artists like Stan Getz.

Kuhn's career featured avant-garde leanings in the 1960s, playing with Kenny Dorham's band, briefly John Coltrane's quartet (as the first and only white pianist), Stan Getz, Art Farmer, and Oliver Nelson; he co-led Three Waves with Steve Swallow and Pete La Roca, and featured on McFarland's The October Suite (1966), a chamber work with strings and Ron Carter. McFarland excelled in orchestral jazz, producing hits like Profiles (1963), large-scale works at Lincoln Center, and co-founding Skye Records with Gabor Szabo and Cal Tjader, contributing to nearly all its releases before its short life. Kuhn moved to Stockholm (1967-1971), returned to New York for trio work with Ron Carter and others, composing the standard 'The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers'; McFarland pursued Broadway and film but died tragically on November 2, 1971, from a methadone-laced drink.

Their styles blended innovation—Kuhn's lyrical, post-bop piano evolving from avant-garde to trio mastery influenced by Bill Evans and Ahmad Jamal; McFarland's vibraphone and arrangements mixed childlike wit, emotional depth, and orchestral complexity. Kuhn's legacy endures through steady recordings and education; McFarland's is underrepresented despite associations with jazz luminaries, with key works like The October Suite highlighting their synergy.
