Stephen Marley, Damian Marley

Biography

Stephen Robert Nesta Marley (born April 20, 1972, Wilmington, Delaware) and Damian Robert Nesta Marley (born July 21, 1978, Kingston, Jamaica) are the sons of reggae patriarch Bob Marley — Stephen the second eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Damian the youngest and only child of Bob and Cindy Breakspeare, the Canadian-Jamaican jazz singer and Miss World 1976. Stephen began performing professionally at age seven alongside siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, even appearing onstage with Bob Marley at the historic 1978 One Love Peace Concert in Kingston. Damian, just two years old when Bob died in 1981, grew up under the shadow of that legacy while forging his own path, forming the teenage group the Shephards at 13 and releasing his deejay-forward debut Mr. Marley in 1996 — a sound that surprised listeners expecting a singer.

Stephen emerged as one of reggae's most accomplished producers, crafting Damian's Grammy-winning albums Halfway Tree (2001) and Welcome to Jamrock (2005) — making Damian the only reggae artist to win two Grammys on the same night — while also producing the landmark Bob Marley remix record Chant Down Babylon (1999), which fused roots reggae with hip-hop collaborators including Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Busta Rhymes. Stephen's own solo career earned him three additional Grammys, with Mind Control (2007) and Revelation Part I: The Root of Life (2011) cementing his reputation as a roots-grounded auteur who writes, produces, and plays most instruments himself. Damian pushed further into cross-genre territory with his landmark 2010 collaboration with Nas, Distant Relatives, a project tracing the historical continuum from African griot traditions through dancehall and hip-hop. His 2018 album Stony Hill netted a fourth Grammy.

Together, Stephen and Damian co-founded and operate Ghetto Youths International, the family-owned label that has nurtured emerging reggae talent including Christopher Ellis (son of rocksteady legend Alton Ellis). Their collaborative performances and recordings — including "The Mission," "Medication," and tracks on Stephen's 2023 acoustic-inspired Old Soul — embody a living Marley legacy that honors Rastafari roots while extending the music's global reach across generations. Combined, the two brothers hold twelve Grammy Awards between them, making them among the most decorated siblings in music history.
