Stephen Marley

Biography

Stephen Robert Nesta Marley was born April 20, 1972, in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, as the fourth child of reggae icon Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He began performing professionally at age seven at his father's instruction, joining siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in what became Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. After Bob's death in 1981, Stephen remained a central creative force in the group as vocalist, guitarist, and drummer — earning three Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album (1989, 1990, 1998) before the Melody Makers disbanded in 2002.

In parallel with performing, Stephen built a formidable production career. His most celebrated work includes the landmark 1999 remix project Chant Down Babylon, which paired his father's original vocals with hip-hop and rock artists including Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, Chuck D, Rakim, The Roots, and Aerosmith. He went on to produce Damian Marley's Grammy-winning Halfway Tree (2001) and Welcome to Jamrock (2005), cementing his reputation as one of reggae's most accomplished producers. His own solo debut, Mind Control (2007), won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, with the single "Hey Baby" featuring Mos Def reaching #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Revelation Pt. 1 – The Root of Life (2011) earned him a second solo Grammy and charted at #92 on the Billboard 200.

Stephen's musical identity spans roots reggae, soul, dancehall, blues, and alternative music — a range made explicit on his 2023 album Old Soul, which features Eric Clapton, Bob Weir, and Jack Johnson alongside covers of The Beatles, Ray Charles, and Santana. With eight Grammy wins total across his solo, production, and group work, he holds the distinction of being the winningest individual in the Best Reggae Album category's history. His legacy is both artistic and familial: he carries his father's roots ethos forward while expanding its sonic vocabulary across decades and genres.
