Biography
Samara Cyn (born Samara Henderson, September 15, 1998) grew up in Murfreesboro, Tennessee before a nomadic childhood shaped by her father's U.S. Army career took her through Augusta, El Paso, Hawaii, Colorado, and eventually Arizona. Her mother, an English teacher, introduced her to slam poetry through the Brave New Voices network; her father introduced her to hip-hop via Slick Rick's The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. She graduated from Arizona State University in May 2021 with a Bachelor's in Supply Chain Management — a degree she's joked about as the sharpest contrast to her actual calling — while sharpening her craft at Poetic Soul, a weekly Phoenix open mic. She wrote her first song in 2019 and gave her first live performance that November.
Her career accelerated rapidly after graduation. She opened for Teddy Swims in Arizona (2021) and Isaiah Rashad on his Cilvia Demo 10th anniversary tour (2024), then released her debut EP The Drive Home via Hollywood Records in October 2024 to critical notice. A co-sign from Lauryn Hill — who pulled Samara onstage at Jazz in the Gardens in March 2025 — and a spot in the 2025 XXL Freshman Class (the only woman selected) announced her as a genuine ascendant force. Her second EP Backroads (June 2025), featuring a Smino collaboration, landed on end-of-year lists at Billboard, Spin, and Hypebeast. She supported Smino on his Kountry Kousins North American tour, debuted on The Daily Show, and performed at Camp Flog Gnaw before releasing her third EP Detour in March 2026.
Samara operates at the intersection of alternative hip-hop, neo-soul, and spoken-word poetry. Her production palette — helmed by longtime partners Two Fresh and Pera, with additional work from Malik Ninety Five and D'Mile — shifted toward an industrial, grungier texture on Detour, reflecting deliberate artistic evolution. Her lyrics are introspective and therapeutic, processing identity and self-acceptance for what she calls "the very extraordinarily ordinary person." She has accumulated public co-signs from Erykah Badu, Nas, Rapsody, Alicia Keys, Doechii, and Denzel Washington, alongside brand partnerships with Nike, Kia, Ganni, and Tommy Hilfiger. With 46 million+ global streams and a Grulke Prize from SXSW 2025, she stands as one of the most compelling emerging voices in alternative hip-hop.
