Biography
Roy Kelton Orbison was born on April 23, 1936, in Vernon, Texas, to Orbie Lee, a manual laborer, and Nadine, a nurse. Growing up in a working-class Texan family during the Great Depression, Orbison was immersed in diverse musical styles including rockabilly, country, zydeco, Tex-Mex, and blues. He received his first guitar as a sixth birthday gift from his father, who taught him to play alongside his uncles and neighbors. The family relocated to Fort Worth in 1942 and later to Wink, Texas, in 1946, where Orbison formed his first band, the Wink Westerners, at age 13 in 1949. By the early 1950s, the group performed regularly on local radio stations, blending country, big-band standards, and pop music.
After graduating from Wink High School in 1954, Orbison briefly attended North Texas State College before dropping out to pursue music full-time. His band, rechristened the Teen Kings to reflect their shift toward rock and roll, recorded "Ooby Dooby" in 1955, which caught the attention of Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Though the song peaked at #59 in 1956, Orbison remained with Sun Records until 1958, developing his songwriting craft. In 1958, he wrote "Claudette" for The Everly Brothers, which reached #30 as a B-side. After joining Monument Records in 1959, Orbison achieved breakthrough success with "Only the Lonely" in 1960, which soared to #2 in the U.S. and #1 in the UK, establishing him as a major recording artist. Orbison became one of the most distinctive voices in pop music, earning praise from Elvis Presley as "the greatest singer in the world." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and died of a heart attack in December 1988.
