raphael Saadiq/ t boz

Biography

Raphael Saadiq, born Charles Ray Wiggins in Oakland, California, developed an early interest in music from age six, learning bass guitar and singing gospel. At 18, he joined Prince's backing band led by Sheila E., gaining valuable experience before launching his professional career as lead vocalist and bassist in the R&B/dance trio Tony! Toni! Toné! alongside his brother Dwayne Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian Riley, initially performing under the name Raphael Wiggins. The group achieved major success in the late 1980s and 1990s with hits like 'Ask of You,' but disbanded after their 1996 album House of Music.

Transitioning to solo work and collaborations, Saadiq formed the supergroup Lucy Pearl in 1999 with Dawn Robinson (En Vogue) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), releasing a self-titled album in 2000 featuring the top-40 single 'Dance Tonight.' He launched his solo career with Instant Vintage (2002) on his Pookie Entertainment label, earning multiple Grammy nominations, followed by Ray Ray (2004) and the critically acclaimed The Way I See It (2008), which blended neo-soul, Motown, and classic R&B styles and garnered three Grammy nods. As a prolific producer and songwriter associated with the neo-soul movement, he contributed to D'Angelo's Grammy-winning Voodoo (2000), Solange's A Seat at the Table (2016), and projects with artists like Joss Stone, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé.

Saadiq's legacy as a 'preeminent R&B artist of the '90s' per critic Robert Christgau includes two Grammy wins for songwriting, Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, and diverse ventures like executive producing the sitcom Love That Girl! (2010) and co-founding video game developer IllFonic (2007). His multi-instrumentalist prowess and hit-making across four decades underscore his influence in R&B, soul, and hip-hop production.
