Biography
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, an iconic Argentine ska band, formed in Buenos Aires in 1985 when co-founders Vicentico (Gabriel Fernandez Capello) and Sr. Flavio (Flavio Cianciarulo), who met as teenagers through family connections, assembled a group including Mario Siperman on keyboards, Sergio Rotman on sax, and others to perform at local venues amid Argentina's military dictatorship. Their early career faced censorship and harassment due to rebellious, socially conscious lyrics, but they broke through with their 1986 debut album Bares y Fondas, followed by hits like 'El genio del dub' and 'Yo te avisé,' blending ska, rock, reggae, jazz, tango, and Latin rhythms in a style noted for irreverence and political undertones.[1][2][3][4][5]
The band's sound evolved through the 1990s with innovative albums like El León (1992), featuring producers like Andrés Calamaro and KC Porter, and collaborations expanding their reach, including 'Matador' from Vasos Vacíos (1994), which became a global hit and earned an MTV Video Music Award. They pioneered as the first Spanish-speaking band on MTV Unplugged, released Grammy-winning works like Fabulosos Calavera (1997), and toured internationally before a 2002 hiatus for solo pursuits. Reuniting in 2008 after the death of percussionist Gerardo 'Totó' Rotblat, they released acclaimed albums such as La Luz del Ritmo (2009) and La salvación de Solo y Juan (2016), which won two Latin Grammys, cementing their legacy as Latin rock innovators.[1][3][4][5][6]
Known for resilience against personal struggles like substance abuse and internal conflicts, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs maintain a core lineup of Vicentico and Sr. Flavio, influencing the rock en español scene with their genre-fusing experimentation and commitment to social commentary, continuing to tour and inspire new generations.[1][3][4]
