Biography
Lawrence "Black" Ardoin, born November 17, 1946 in Duralde, Louisiana, is a prominent figure in the Creole and zydeco music traditions of southwest Louisiana. The son of legendary accordionist Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin, Lawrence grew up immersed in a musical family whose roots stretch back to the earliest days of recorded Creole music. Initially a drummer in the Ardoin Family Band alongside his father and brothers, Lawrence switched to accordion in 1975 after the tragic death of his older brother Gustav, who had previously held that role. This transition marked the continuation of the Ardoin family's musical legacy, with Lawrence stepping forward as both bandleader and creative force.[2][4][1]
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lawrence led his own group, Tradition Creole, and became known for his authentic Louisiana French Creole sound. His music blended traditional Creole, zydeco, and Cajun influences, characterized by driving accordion rhythms, soulful vocals, and the use of both French and English lyrics. Lawrence's recordings, including his acclaimed album "Tradition Creole," are celebrated for their preservation of rural Creole musical forms at a time when zydeco was evolving into more modern styles. He is also recognized as the father of Chris and Sean Ardoin, both of whom have become influential zydeco musicians in their own right, ensuring the Ardoin family's impact on Creole and zydeco music endures for future generations.[2][5][6]
