Biography
Nicole Monique Wray, known professionally as Lady Wray, was born on May 2, 1979 (or 1981 per some sources), in Salinas, California, and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. She began singing in church choirs at age 8, developing a voice influenced by her gospel upbringing, Aretha Franklin, and the Jackson 5 family. At 15, she auditioned for Missy Elliott in her mother's home, impressing Elliott enough to sign her on the spot to The Goldmind Inc./Elektra Records. Her debut single 'Make It Hot' (1998) peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, earned gold certification, and propelled her self-titled album to moderate success, though follow-ups underperformed, leading to her departure in 2001 after shelved projects like Elektric Blue and Lovechild.
Wray's career evolved through label shifts and collaborations, including a cameo in State Property 2 and writing for gospel duo Pam & Dodi. In 2012, she formed the retro-soul duo Lady with Terri Walker, met in 2009, releasing a self-titled album in 2013 on Truth & Soul Records after serving as background vocalists for Lee Fields. After Walker's exit, Wray rebranded as Lady, the Band, then adopted the stage name Lady Wray upon joining Big Crown Records. Her solo albums Queen Alone (2016), featuring singles like 'Do It Again' and 'Guilty' (inspired by her brother's incarceration), and Piece of Me (2022, peaking at #7 on UK R&B Albums), embrace a retro-soul style drawing from 1960s/70s soul, blending her hip-hop/R&B roots with authentic, diaristic songwriting.
A pivotal moment came in 2010 with featured vocals on The Black Keys' Brothers, reigniting her confidence after feeling sidelined. Now a respected retro-soul artist and producer, Lady Wray's resilience, versatile range, and shift from teen pop sensation to mature soul interpreter cement her legacy in contemporary soul music.
