Biography
Keith Sweat, born July 22, 1961 in Harlem, New York City, grew up near the Apollo Theater and began performing with a local band called Jamilah at age 14. Before breaking into music full-time, he worked his way up from night stock clerk at Macy's to a brokerage assistant on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. After leaving the group in 1984 to pursue a solo career, he landed a deal with Vintertainment Records and released his landmark debut Make It Last Forever in 1987, which sold three million copies and helped define the new jack swing movement — a fusion of funk, hip-hop rhythms, and smooth R&B vocals that reshaped late-1980s Black popular music.
Qing Madi, born Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma on July 1, 2006, in Benin City, Nigeria, began performing at age seven, inspired by her cultural roots and Kendrick Lamar's lyricism. She sang in her church's adult choir as a child, won dance competitions, and eventually built a following through school talent shows before her breakout 2022 TikTok-driven single "See Finish." Her 2023 self-titled debut EP — which also included the BNXN-assisted "Ole" — and her 2025 debut album I Am the Blueprint established her as a leading voice in the Afropop-meets-R&B wave emerging from Nigeria. In 2024, Apple Music inducted her into their Rising Class alongside Tyla, OdumoduBlvck, and Bloody Civilian.
The two artists bridged generations and continents on the 2025 single "Working," co-written with Bankulli and Roy Hamilton III and co-produced by Sweat and Jason Scott. The track blends Sweat's classic quiet storm sensibility with Qing Madi's Afro-soul vocal style, exploring themes of devotion and relentless pursuit in a relationship. A subsequent remix, "Working II," added Lil Wayne and expanded the single into a landmark cross-generational, intercontinental collaboration. Keith Sweat's broader legacy includes six platinum albums, the discovery and production of groups Silk, Kut Klose, and Dru Hill, and co-founding the R&B supergroup LSG alongside Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill.
