Biography
Jennifer Jean Warnes was born on March 3, 1947, in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Southern California. She began singing in church and at local community events as a child, and by age 10 was already performing regularly in her area. Inspired by folk singer Joan Baez, she pursued music seriously in her teens, performing in light opera and professional theatre productions around Southern California while simultaneously participating in the burgeoning Los Angeles folk scene alongside future stars like Jackson Browne and Jose Feliciano. At age 17, she received a scholarship to study opera at Immaculate Heart College, though she ultimately chose to pursue folk music instead.
Warnes' professional career began in 1968 when she signed with Parrot Records and released her self-titled debut album. She gained significant exposure as a featured vocalist on the television variety show "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," performing alongside artists like Donovan, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Glen Campbell. She also starred as Sheila in the original West Coast production of the musical "Hair." After a period away from music in the mid-1970s, she resurfaced as a country artist and achieved her first major hit with "Right Time of the Night" (1976), which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Her career trajectory shifted dramatically in the 1980s when she began recording film theme songs, winning three Academy Awards for Best Original Song: "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae (1979), "Up Where We Belong" with Joe Cocker from An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with Bill Medley from Dirty Dancing (1987).
Throughout her five-decade career, Warnes has demonstrated remarkable versatility, moving fluidly between pop, rock, jazz, folk, traditional, opera, and spiritual music. She is particularly renowned for her powerful voice and her interpretations of film songs. Her 1987 album Famous Blue Raincoat, featuring her interpretations of Leonard Cohen's compositions, became a critical and commercial success that revitalized Cohen's career and introduced him to the MTV generation. Warnes has won two Grammy Awards and multiple Golden Globe Awards, establishing herself as one of the most beloved vocalists of her generation and a highly respected album artist.
