Jeanette Jones

Biography

Jeanette Jones was a powerful soul and gospel singer born and raised in San Francisco, California. She first discovered music through church singing, which became her gateway into performance. Jones gained prominence as the featured vocalist with the Voices of Victory gospel choir, one of the most successful gospel choirs on the West Coast by the late 1960s. Her voice was characterized by a remarkable combination of power, passion, emotion, and soulfulness, delivered with technical control and sincerity.

Despite her exceptional vocal talent, Jones's recording career was remarkably brief. When producer Leo Kulka first heard her sing with the Voices of Victory in 1965, he immediately sought to sign her to a recording contract. However, Jones initially declined, preferring to continue what she viewed as "the Lord's work" with the gospel choir. She eventually relented in late 1967 and recorded her only solo single, "Darling, I'm Standing By You," released on the Golden Soul label in 1969 and reissued by Kent Records in 1971. The single failed commercially. Following this disappointment, Jones transitioned to session singing work and collaborated with guitarist Mike Bloomfield on the Mill Valley Bunch project, contributing lead vocals to their 1972 Verve Records album "Casting Pearls." Her last recording session occurred in 1974 when she recorded a publishing demo for Barry Goldberg. After this, Jones stepped away from the music industry entirely. She is believed to have settled quietly in San Francisco, remaining an enigmatic figure whose immense talent never achieved the commercial success it deserved.
