Biography
Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas. She began performing as a child and later studied theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, initially aiming for a Broadway career before shifting focus to music. After dropping out, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2003, where she worked at an Office Depot, self-produced her demo Janelle Monáe: The Audition, and founded the Wondaland Arts Society collective with Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder to promote innovative music and art.

- Monáe performed Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” at an open mic in 2005, impressing Big Boi of OutKast who approached her immediately afterward.
- She lived in a boarding house with five other women in Atlanta while working at Office Depot and touring colleges to promote her music.
