Biography
The James Hughes & Jimmy Smith Quintet is a Detroit-based jazz group co-led by saxophonist James Hughes and trumpeter Jimmy Smith. James Hughes, born and raised in the Detroit area, developed a deep grounding in the hard-bop tradition of Motor City jazz — a scene defined by the fertile 1950s and '60s era of musicians who shaped the city's reputation as a serious jazz capital. Hughes honed his craft over more than two decades of professional performance, studying and absorbing the vocabularies of bop and post-bop while also becoming a respected educator, offering master classes at institutions including the University of Toledo, Western Michigan University, Oakland University, Eastern Michigan University, and Wayne State University. He also served as jazz conductor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp from 2007 to 2017.
The quintet formed in the autumn of 2012 with an explicit purpose: to carry Detroit's bop tradition forward with fresh original compositions. Rounding out the group are pianist Phil Kelly, bassist Takashi Iio, and drummer Nate Winn — a rhythm section praised for its tight, swinging ensemble work. Their debut album From Here on Out (2013) collected nine original compositions rooted squarely in Detroit hard bop. Their second album, Ever Up & Onward (2016), expanded the palette into post-bop territory and earned a spot on AllMusic's list of top jazz albums of the year, receiving airplay on over 100 radio stations across the U.S. Their third album Motion (2018) drew on the straight-ahead sound popular in Detroit in the 1970s, while a fourth release, The Gates, featured New York City trombonist John Yao and was called "a thing of beauty" by JazzTimes.
Critics consistently praise the quintet's combination of tight ensemble cohesion, strong individual soloing, and the fact that Hughes and Smith compose and arrange all of the material themselves — a rarity that gives the group a unified compositional identity. Inspired by the grand Motor City jazz scene of the 1950s and early '60s, the quintet updates and extends that tradition for the 21st century. Hughes has also performed as a sideman or guest with a wide range of jazz luminaries, including Dave Liebman, Richie Cole, John Clayton, Jerry Bergonzi, Jimmy Heath, Arturo Sandoval, Kurt Elling, Barry Harris, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.
