Biography
Jack Kerouac, born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac on March 12, 1922, in Lowell, Massachusetts, was a French-Canadian American novelist and poet central to the Beat Generation. Growing up in a working-class family, he excelled in athletics, earning a football scholarship to Columbia University, but injuries and conflicts led him to drop out and immerse himself in New York's jazz and literary scenes. His early life experiences, including travels across America, fueled his spontaneous prose style, epitomized in his 1957 bestseller On the Road, which captured the restless spirit of postwar youth.
Kerouac's foray into music came in 1957 during poetry readings at New York's Village Vanguard nightclub, where initial performances without accompaniment drew poor reception. On the second night, television host and jazz pianist Steve Allen provided impromptu piano backing, sparking a successful collaboration. This led to the 1959 album Poetry for the Beat Generation on Dot Records (released after a delay), featuring Kerouac reciting his poems over Allen's cool jazz piano. The duo also appeared together on The Steve Allen Show in 1959, with Kerouac reading from On the Road. Their spoken word style blended Beat poetry with jazz improvisation, though some critics noted a disconnect between Kerouac's intense delivery and Allen's lighter accompaniment.
Kerouac's musical legacy lies in pioneering spoken word albums, influencing the fusion of literature and jazz. He released two more in the trilogy (Blues and Haikus, Readings by Jack Kerouac) before his death on October 21, 1969, from alcoholism-related complications. The Poetry for the Beat Generation collaboration endures as a cultural artifact of the Beat era, reissued on CD in 1999.
