Biography
Ivan Neville is a New Orleans-born keyboardist, vocalist, and composer born August 19, 1959 — son of soul legend Aaron Neville and nephew of Art, Charles, and Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers. His given name was originally Aaron Neville Jr., changed in infancy by his maternal grandparents. By his teens he was playing third keyboards in the nascent Neville Brothers alongside Art Neville, absorbing the deep funk and second-line tradition at the source. His 1988 debut solo album If My Ancestors Could See Me Now (Polydor) produced the Top 30 hit "Not Just Another Girl" and a Billboard charting duet with Bonnie Raitt. Through the 1980s and 90s he became a first-call session and touring musician — playing on the Rolling Stones' Dirty Work and Voodoo Lounge, joining Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos, and even fronting the Spin Doctors on tour when Chris Barron lost his voice to vocal cord paralysis.
In 2003, Ivan co-founded Dumpstaphunk for a single Jazz Fest gig alongside cousin Ian Neville (son of Art), bassists Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III, and drummer Deven Trusclair. The band grew into a major touring act rooted in Meters-style deep funk, with guest appearances from Carlos Santana, Bob Weir, George Clinton, Flea, Chaka Khan, and Trombone Shorty across albums including Dirty Word (2013) and Where Do We Go From Here (2021). After a 20-year solo hiatus, Ivan returned with Touch My Soul (2023, Mascot Label Group), built from home piano sketches over Sly Stone-inspired drum loops, featuring Aaron Neville, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, and Trombone Shorty.
The Spotify credit "Ivan Neville, Big Sam Circus Min" documents a specific 2020 collaboration: when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled Jazz Fest, New York funk band Circus Mind (led by Mark Rechler, a NOLA-rooted musician) released the charity single "JazzFest Time" featuring Ivan Neville and trombonist Big Sam Williams (Sammie Williams), a NOCCA-trained musician, founding member of the Stooges Brass Band, veteran of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and leader of Big Sam's Funky Nation — and, notably, great-grandson of Buddy Bolden, the cornetist widely considered the inventor of jazz. All proceeds from the track went to Jazz Fest-related relief causes. The three artists represent a cross-generational convergence of New Orleans musical lineage.
