Ian Dogole

Biography

Ian Dogole was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he began his musical journey at age four studying piano before switching to guitar at age seven. Over the past 40 years, he has developed a distinctive career as a multipercussionist, bandleader, educator, recording artist, composer, and producer, articulating a vision of 'Music Beyond Borders' or 'Global Fusion Music' that blends jazz innovations with indigenous rhythms, scales, and instruments from Africa, the Middle East, South America, and beyond. Based in Novato, California, Dogole plays percussion from diverse global traditions and has released seven records and a DVD as a leader, while performing and recording with notable artists including Hamza el Din, Richie Cole, Paul McCandless, and Alex de Grassi.[1][2][5][6]

Dogole's musical style fuses the improvisational creativity of jazz pioneers like Randy Weston, Woody Shaw, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane with multicultural elements, creating uplifting, horizon-expanding music through his ensemble Music Beyond Borders. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, InterMusic SF, and the Marin Arts Council, and remains active as a music educator in Marin County schools and a volunteer for Bread & Roses. His recent projects include the 2025 album Outside the Box – Jazz Journeys & Worlds Beyond on Patois Records and the upcoming The Last Trane to Africa, set for release on January 23, 2026, featuring African percussion alongside jazz instruments in an Afrocentric homage to Coltrane.[2][3][8]

Dogole's legacy lies in his ability to bridge cultural boundaries, transforming percussion into evocative, vocalistic expressions that paint vivid sonic landscapes, as praised in reviews for their shamanistic and magical qualities. His work continues to inspire through live performances, recordings, and education, promoting music that uplifts spirits and opens hearts.[1][4][8]
