Heaven & Earth

Biography

Heaven & Earth was an American soul/R&B vocal group formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1974 by teenage brothers Dwight Ronnell Dukes (falsetto lead) and James Dukes (bass), originally under the name Soul Majestics. The initial lineup included Keith Steward (tenor) and Michael Brown (baritone). They released their debut single 'I Can't Seem to Forget You' in 1975 on GEC Records, followed by the album of the same name in 1976, produced by manager Clarence Johnson and featuring songs mostly written by Jerline Shelton and Maurice Commander.

In 1977, lead vocalist Michael Brown was controversially removed from the group. Signing with Mercury Records, they issued self-titled album Heaven and Earth (1978) and Fantasy (1979), both co-produced by Johnson with arrangements by jazz pianist Floyd Morris, each yielding two singles. Dean Williams briefly handled vocals in 1978, followed by Greg Rose through 1982. Their final album, That's Love, appeared on WMOT Records in 1981. After 1982, Dwight Dukes left to form the trio Cashmere.

The group's style blended soul harmonies with post-disco elements, though they remained a regional act without major commercial breakthroughs. James Dukes passed away in 2021, marking the end of an era for the Chicago soul outfit.
