Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue

Biography

Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue is a New Orleans-based honky tonk, country, and rockabilly outfit fronted by Vanessa Niemann — known on stage simply as "The Gal" and dubbed by fans as "The Punk Rock Patsy Cline." Niemann is Appalachian-born and Maryland-bred, raised in the bluegrass- and folk-steeped hills of western Maryland by classically trained musician parents who filled the household with music. She experimented early with clarinet and trombone before settling into piano and voice, and after migrating to New Orleans she formed the Honky Tonk Revue in 2004, stepping out on her own when a previous ensemble she performed with pivoted to an all-instrumental direction. The band quickly became a vanguard act in what would grow into a thriving New Orleans country scene.

The band's signature blend of classic country, rockabilly, and western swing — delivered with infectious dance-hall energy and vivid, evocative songwriting — earned them rapid recognition as a Crescent City institution. They became perennial favorites at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, appearing every year from their earliest days; 2017 marked their tenth consecutive Jazz Fest appearance, and by 2022 they were performing on the main Festival Stage for their thirteenth year. Their catalog spans five studio albums, including the 2014 release Last to Leave (largely original material) and the acclaimed Lost & Found (2018), recorded over four days at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi, produced by Jimbo Mathus, and exploring themes of loss, change, and discovery. Multiple Big Easy Award and Best of the Beat Award wins have cemented their standing as one of New Orleans' most beloved live acts.

Beyond the Honky Tonk Revue, Vanessa Niemann has lent her voice to collaborations with legendary artists including Dr. John, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers, with whom she has toured. The band has shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and Marcia Ball, among countless others. Their current lineup features guitarists Abram Racin and Justin LeCuyer, drummer Gabe Marshall, upright bassist Corey McGillivary, and harmonica player Button Sher, all contributing to a live show that has built a devoted following of two-steppers across the country and beyond.
