Fun Boy Three

Biography

Fun Boy Three was a British new wave and ska vocal group formed in 1981 by Terry Hall, Lynval Golding, and Neville Staple, who departed from The Specials amid creative differences and internal tensions following the success of 'Ghost Town'. Signing with Chrysalis Records, they quickly released their debut single 'The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum)' and a self-titled album in 1982, co-produced with Dave Jordan, which reached #7 on the UK charts. Their music blended politically charged retro-pop with influences from vintage soul, ska, reggae, muzak, and kitsch movie soundtracks, featuring hits like 'It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)' with Bananarama and a cover of 'Our Lips Are Sealed', co-written by Hall and The Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin.

The group's second album, 'Waiting' (1983), produced by David Byrne of Talking Heads, included further singles and showcased a more deliberate evolution in their sound, though they disbanded that summer just as 'Our Lips Are Sealed' gained traction in the US. Terry Hall's decision to leave—later forming The Colourfield—marked the end, with Golding and Staple briefly continuing as Sunday Best alongside Pauline Black of The Selecter. Hall passed away in December 2022 from pancreatic cancer at age 63, leaving a legacy of innovative, protest-driven pop that bridged 2 Tone ska with broader new wave influences.

Fun Boy Three's brief career produced six UK hit singles and two Top 20 albums, noted for their dark, pessimistic tone, acapella elements, and vocal harmonies, leaving an indelible mark on British music during a turbulent era of social unrest.

Fun Facts

  • Their biggest hit 'Our Lips Are Sealed' was co-written by Terry Hall and Jane Wiedlin during The Specials era, with Fun Boy Three's slower version following The Go-Go's original.
  • The band's name 'Fun Boy Three' is a sarcastic title, contrasting their often dark, protest-oriented lyrics and perpetual frowning expressions, especially Hall's.
  • Terry Hall revealed that 'Well Fancy That!' was inspired by his traumatic real-life kidnapping and abuse by a pedophile teacher ring at age 12.
  • They disbanded in 1983 just as US success loomed with 'Our Lips Are Sealed' and an MTV video, shrouded in mystery around Hall's decision.
